Learn the Importance of a Conclusion in a Research Proposal

Purpose of a Research Conclusion

A research conclusion is an overview that summarizes your research. The summary provides both evidence and logic supporting the main ideas in your research paper. Besides, your summary ends with a thesis statement that ties all the sections together.

Since a summary helps answer the last question raised in the research, it has to be informative. It helps prevent students from getting stuck because they had too many questions and not enough answers. The summary also answers the research questions: Who is your audience? What makes this research relevant to you?

Even when your summary is complete, your conclusion should answer the following questions:

  • What new information did your paper add to your field?
  • What is the overall message?
  • How will this research impact the area of study?

When writing a research conclusion, it is important to follow all the instructions given by your instructor. The purpose of the conclusion is to address the research questions stated above and inform readers on the change from the introduction to the rest of the paper.

Your summary should also be as brief as possible. Since a thesis statement ties all the sections together, the summary is a single sentence that connects the entire paper.

Include the research questions and answer them using either direct or indirect questions. Direct questions allow students to use other researchers’ data while avoiding biased information. The trick is to use different research methods and compare them with the prior ones.

Hence, students have to understand that direct questions are the best to answer your summary questions. As a result, the summary will help focus the reader to understand what you were going to discuss. Consequently, a direct question will focus the readers on the answer.

Importance of a Research Conclusion

A conclusion should allow the readers to answer all the questions without bias. This means that you should not use the conclusion to introduce anything new. Instead, it should summarize the research. This means you should not introduce a new idea in your summary.

A useful conclusion should answer the three questions stated in the introduction section and show the readers that the essay is complete. Therefore, the conclusion should also:

  1. Clarify whether your study affects or does not affect the topic.
  2. Debate the focus and reasoning of your study.
  3. Discuss your findings’ relevance to the area of study.

Since a thesis and purpose of the summary are the same as in other pieces of writing, it is easy to follow the points and arrive at a conclusion. A well-written summary can persuade readers that your research is worth reading.
